What Are the Best Ways to Keep Yourself in Good Condition as a Family Caregiver?November 24, 2016
Caregiver in Nassau NY
Keeping yourself in tip-top condition can help you to be a much more effective family caregiver. If you’re not already engaging in at least one of these activities, you should do what you can to change that around.
Exercise at Least a Little Bit Every Day
Even a little bit of exercise every day helps to improve your strength and stamina, two items you really need if you’re a family caregiver. Talk to your doctor before you begin a new exercise plan to make sure that you’re healthy enough to exercise. Once you have the go ahead, start out slowly and work your way up to more involved exercise. You don’t want to wear yourself out too fast.
Eat Healthy, Regular Meals
What you put into your body is what it uses as the fuel to get you through every day. If you’re constantly feeling exhausted even with good sleep, you may need to look at what you’re eating. Processed foods, junk foods, and foods with empty calories don’t give your body what it needs. A few appointments with a nutritionist can help you to make some good changes to your diet.
Get Enough Sleep
If you’re not getting enough sleep, that can cause quite a few problems for you. Make sure that you’re getting to bed early enough to fall asleep and to get as much sleep as you need to be ready to go the next day. Continuing problems with sleep may mean that you have other problems going on, so it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor about the trouble you’re having.
Go to Your Own Doctor’s Appointments
Many family caregivers are great about getting their elderly loved ones to doctor’s appointments, but terrible at keeping their own. It’s time to turn that around and make sure that you’re getting to all of your regular checkups and appointments. Your health is essential if you’re going to take excellent care of your elderly loved one.
You don’t have to make all of these changes at once. Pick one and then add improvements to your self-care plan later.
